403 NW 5th Avenue
Portland, OR

Built in 1890, this historic building was designed by the notable Portland architecture firm of Whidden & Lewis. Originally used to build caskets and windmills at the turn of the 20th Century, the design includes a stucco façade with contrasting brick quoining at the corners topped with a decorative brick cornice. The five-story building has open 5,000 sq ft floor plates, large storefront windows, and the original massive timber columns and exposed roof structure.

*Potentially eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places

* If placed on the National Register, building is eligible for Federal Historic Tax Credits and Portland Development Commission programs

*The building could also be eligible for a 15 year property tax freeze program

Located on the Portland Transit Mall, the building is near Union Station on the 5th Avenue next to the upcoming MAX line extension connecting Union Station with Portland State University.

Construction is underway on the City’s $5.35 million improvement project in Old Town/Chinatown. The goal of the improvements is to strengthen the identity of this historic district, foster cultural and economic diversity, and promote a vibrant pedestrian environment for commercial, retail and residential uses. The building’s location on NW Flanders will place it on one of two festival streets planned. The festival streets will have public art installed on large granite planters and will allow cars but can be easily closed to accommodate neighborhood festivals.
